Riots at Tchaker Stadium: Three policemen injured and 20 persons arrested

Algiers- The operation of sale of tickets for the match which will oppose the Algerian national football team to its Zambian counterpart for the combined qualifcations for the World Cup and the CAN in 2010 in South Africa has started under normal conditions.

  • Unfortunately, a few hours later, things have taken another turn and clashes broke out between police officers and the crowds of youth who came to buy tickets for the match.

    Young football fans came up to ensure a place in stadium for the important and crucial match could not digest the reaction of the director of the stadium who declared that there were no more tickets. Knowing that 10,000 tickets on a total of 17,500 were sold.

    Anger is then raised a notch when the youth started firing on law enforcement officers who were on the scene, wounding three policemen and causing damage to a Nissan vehicle belonging to the police.

    Shops near the stadium was trashed by angry mobs. Some bystanders were injured and panicked people fled the scene.

    The Wali of Blida moved on site to inspect the damage and gave instructions for strengthening security for the matches scheduled for Monday.

    Moreover, the President of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) Mohamed Raouraoua contacted the Director of Youth and Sports of the department of Blida, Mr. Belkacem Mellah asking him to ensure control of the situation.

    More than 20 people who were behind these riots were arrested by elements of the security
