Clashes, injuries and deaths; the victory turns into mourning

Sunday night the streets of Algeria have been literally invaded by supporters since the final whistle marking the victory of the Algerian team by 1 to 0 against Zambia in a match for qualifying for the World Cup in Africa South in 2010.

• The excited fans have turned the celebration into a riot that required the intervention of police.
  
  At midnight (local), thousands of supporters rushed in the streets, cars flying the national flag honking while firecrackers, smoke bombs and fireworks erupted in all parts of the town of Sidi Amar in the department of Annaba. Taking advantage of this opportunity, youth groups blocked the main road with stones and forming human shields when collecting on the road to prevent motorists to move.
  
  Supporters, excited by the victory of the greens, but also taking the opportunity to let off steam, threw firecrackers, smoke bombs and fireworks. Girls and boys in trucks with no respect for traffic laws and safety measures. Motorists were driving madly. This has led the security services to intervene to restore order and security by reopening the road to traffic and calming minds until late into the night.

  Immediately after the evening prayer, the cafes of El Bordj were invaded by supporters of the national team. One giant screen was placed at the Youth Home (Maison de Jeunes) Khelfa Tahar. Some televisions have been installed on sidewalks in front of houses to allow people to watch the match, creating a stadium atmosphere in the streets of neighbourhoods.
  
  12 fans injured in celebrations in the streets of Constantine, including two seriously injured who were evacuated to the Hospital.
  
  Hundreds of young people invaded the streets to celebrate the victory of the « fennecs » causing incidents, sometimes serious. Not less than twelve fans were injured. Two seriously injured were evacuated to Ben Badis Hospital. The first incident was recorded in the area of « Chaabet Er-rehash » on the way to « El Khroub » when 7 children aged between 8 and 13  fell from a truck that was heading downtown to join the cheering crowd. The second took place near Cirta hotel when a young man aged about twenty has been hit by a Megane car wounding him seriously.

  Health centers in the department of Jijel were overwhelmed by the evacuation of casualties following incidents that happened during the hysterical celebrations by fans at the end of the match Algeria - Zambia. A young man in the town of Texenna has been suffering from serious injuries at the head and body parts after a fall from a tractor at 1 am. In El Milia, a 7 year old boy was seriously wounded in the leg.
  
  In the general hysteria, many jijelis have failed to take the meal of « imsak » (morning meal before the start of fast).
  
  A citizen died of a heart attack in Tizi Ouzou
  
    A man aged fifty died of a heart attack in his family home in the region of Draa Ben Khedda, 8 km west of Tizi Ouzou. According to information received by Ennahar, the victim was a strong supporter of the National team who could not withstand the pressure of the game in the first half.
