Egyptian Football: Doping undermines African achievements

Algiers- Egyptian international player Hossam Ghali, who plays for Saudi club of An-Nasr faces a suspension for a period of one year for doping after the blood test made after the game against el-Hilal in the quarter-finals of King Cup on February 10, 2010.

  • The information was reported by the Saudi sports press, according to which the Disciplinary and Doping Control Committee will convenel the player to hear his arguments soon on the results of the tests on his blood which were positive. In case Ghal could not justify this by medical reports from his club or the medical staff of the Egyptian selection on the use of products containing the banned substance for medical reasons, then he will be imposed a sanction of suspension and would not be able to take part at any local or international competition for a period of one year.
Furthermore, this information will confirm the fact that Egyptian footballer use doping at the African Cup of Nations 2010 in Angola, where they show a hight physical level compared to that shortly before during the combined qualifying to WC-CAN. This scandal has confirmed what had been reported in various reports in Africa, especially in Cameroon, on the doping of Egyptian players.
The sanction against Ghali comes after the suspension of both Majed El Mouled and Alae El Kawkabi by the Committee for a term of one year. El Kawkabi was interrogated for three hours Monday night at the headquarters of the Saudi football federation, and tried in vain to convince the committee.
Ghali’s future with An-Nasr will be compromised and the latter could not play official friendlies with the national team of Egypt.
Ghali joined An-Nasr in 2008, after his adventure in England, where his relations with the supporters and the leaders of Tottenham deteriorated.
After the CAN in Angola, the level of Ghali has improved but he came into conflict with the new coaching staff headed by Italian Zinga who did not like his way of playing and asked for his departure.
Ennahar had already published these African reports, based on international scientific standards and concluded that the majority of Egyptian players use doping, which enabled them to appear in great physical shape compared to other African selections and at the same time, raises questions about the reasons for the failure of Egypt to qualify for the World Cup.
