England - Portsmouth sentenced to D2 after removal of 9 points
LONDON - The Premier League confirmed Wednesday the withdrawal of nine points to Portsmouth, the price of its placement in receivership, which condemns the club of southern England to relegation to second division.
- Without even the deduction of points, applied "with immediate effect", "Pompey" was the last rank of 1st Division. It now has only ten points, with a delay of 17 lengths on the first non-relegation zone when it has only nine games left.
Heavily in debt, struggling to pay its players and to honour its contracts with its creditors, Portsmouth in February became the first club in the history of the Premier League to be placed in receivership. It dismissed last week a quarter of its employees.
