Algeria-Morocco/ Gerets: "This is just a football match"
RABAT - Morocco-Algeria match, scheduled March 27 in Annaba in Algeria, "is a football match and must not deviate from its athletic aspect," said Tuesday the coach of Moroccan Football team, alluding to the tension that often characterizes the meetings between the two countries.
- "This is just a football game (...) It should not come out of its sports’ frame," said the Belgian Eric Gerets, the team coach of Morocco on the Moroccan channel Medi1-TV.
- The match counts for the third day (GrD) qualifications to the African Cup of Nations (CAN-2012) to be held in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, from 21 January to 12 February 2012.
- "The lions of the Atlas (Ed.: nickname given to the Moroccan players) are in a better position than their opponents who, if defeated, will be eliminated," said Gerets, who also stressed "individual qualities that Algerian players have."
- Meetings between the Algerian "Fennec" and "Atlas Lions" are often marked by a climate of tension.
