Iran dismiss Sunday the coach of its national team, Ali Daei, after the defeat (1-2) against Saudi Arabia on Saturday in Tehran, in a qualification match for the World Cup 2010, announced Sunday the news state agency IRNA.

  •     Ali Daei was dismissed from his post as national team coach, in response to a request from people for his neglect in fulfilling his duty and his poor performance in skills for the World Cup, wrote IRNA, citing an anonymous source.

Iran, which hopes to win a fourth qualification for a World Cup, now occupies the 4th place in Group B Asia, with 6 points after 5 matches, including one victory.

The departure of Daei was considered imminent after the humiliating home defeat (1-2) against the selection of Saudi Arabia, to some 100,000 enthusiastic supporters.

Daei, an Iranian football star, was named coach in March 2008.

After his retirement from football, he first led a team of a club in Tehran, Saipa. Daei scored during his football career 109 goals in 148 international matches, a record.

Daei also took part in what is considered the greatest football match in Iran: a victory for the national team 2 to 1, against the United States at the World Cup1998 in France. He was also once been crowned player of the year in Asia.
