Former Brazilian international footballer Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, 57, nicknamed the "Doctor" died Sunday following a bowel infection, said in a statement Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo.

  • Socrates will be buried Sunday in Ribeira Preto, where he began his football career in the early 70's with the famous Botafogo.
  • Hospitalized in intensive care Friday, Socrates who was Captain of the Seleçao at the World Cup 1982 in Gijon in Spain and 1986 in Mexico had admitted problems with alcohol.
